Matthew Wood writes in “The Earthwise Herbal: A Complete Guide to Old World Medicinal Plants” : “It is suited to people with deep unconscious issues that disturb the sleep. The mind may be preoccupied, but the problems come up from below consciousness. This fits the physical profile for Thyme, as it is a remedy for toxins and closed passageways deep in the body.

Thyme is considered a parasympathetic relaxant. Sleep and dreams occur when the parasympathetic is running the ship, so disturbed sleep and dreams indicate that this branch of the autonomic cannot fully relax.” Carvacrol (which is present in the essential oil of thyme) has been shown to affect neuron activity in ways that boosts the feelings of well being.

A short history of Thyme:

Thyme’s reputation as a healer and protector goes back thousands of years as an embalming herb in ancient Egypt where it was not only disinfecting but a powerful aid to those making their passage into the next life. Associated with courage, bravery and strength ,Greeks and Romans burned bundles of thyme to purify their temples and homes, and to evoke a spirit of courage in those who inhaled it.

Well before the mechanics of infection were fully understood, 19th-century nurses were soaking bandages in decoctions of thyme. Thyme soaked bandages were previously used to treat the plague in the time of Black Death. One of the chemical compounds found in thyme is a powerful antiseptic known as thymol. Thyme has proved effective against very serious infective organisms such as anthrax, typhoid and diphtheria.

In Victorian times a patch of wild thyme in the woods was a sign of recent activity of fairies.
